Latest Released Rust Updates

Here are a few of the latest Rust patch notes for the PC version of the game:

  • Improved performance and behaviors for ragdolls.
  • Scrollable item descriptions for lengthy item descriptors.
  • Pressing ‘F’ is now a shortcut to finding the player’s position when using the map.
  • Dropped items in the Cargo Ship no longer fall through.

These are the most notable improvements and fixes from the last patch and there haven’t been any notable updates since. However, Facepunch has outlined what players can expect in February and for the entirety of 2024 in their latest dev blog.

Upcoming Content in February

The most notable change coming in February is the addition of Backpacks to the game. Backpacks are a new craftable attire that will be released on February 1st. Fashioning and equipping a backpack will give players more space to carry items.

Backpacks have already been added to the Rust Staging branch in case you want to try it out early.

Additionally, in February, players can expect a new limit to the number of shelters that can be placed at once.

General Updates & Improvements

Besides the February update, Rust devs have also outlined some of the content that is currently in the works. Here are some of the proposed updates coming this year –

  • Optional tutorial for new players
  • Improved UI for server listings
  • Clan system
  • New weapons
  • Motorcycles
  • Revamped monuments like the Compound

They’ve also outlined some revamps to the world and environment in-game. While they’ve not outlined specifically when or what to expect in 2024, there are a few patches that are already in the works –

  • Unique buildable areas like lakes, canyons, and improved river systems.
  • Procedurally generated caves.
  • A new biome
  • Improved cliffs and rock formation variations

Overview of Rust in 2024

Rust devs also addressed some pressing concerns about in-game content. These are some of the issues and topics they’re aware of and are working to implement in 2024 and beyond.

Let’s take a look at some of the other areas devs are looking to improve in the coming months:

Global Rendering and Performance Enhancements

After implementing the Global rendering system late last year which intended to reduce base pop-in and improve view distance for player structures, devs have constantly run into issues with the new system.

Even with constant patch releases to address performance issues, the problem kept repeating. Global rendering will be properly tested and is currently aimed to be publicly released in March 2024.

Additionally, devs have outlined their focus on improving game performance by reducing memory usage to improve player FPS experience. This update is slated to be released in the next month or two.

The Nexus System

The Nexus system is the dev’s next big goal to release in 2024. While they still have plenty of work to put into it, the Nexus system aims to combine servers into one, ginormous, and unlimited world.

Players would only need to travel on a flight or boat to the edge of the map to access other worlds and servers instantaneously. The system is intended not to replace the current server format but is an additional way for players to explore the world in Rust.

Pets

Unfortunately, even though devs have made steady progress in adding pets to the game, they’ve run into some issues they need to address before they can continue. Pets are no longer coming in 2024 but will be implemented further down the line.

Besides the above-mentioned updates, developers Facepunch are also working on revamping nighttime lighting, anti-cheat systems, constant performance updates, and revisiting and improving both old and new content.
